Fact: It is reported that 1 out of every 10 guns recovered after use in a crime actually came from someone 17 or younger.
The most unfortunate element of so many teen caused deaths is that the teen in possession of the gun were likely to obtain a gun, if they truly wanted a gun. There are so many ways for a teen to obtain a gun, some of these ways are: Stealing it from someone else that the teen knows has a gun, Sometimes teens find guns when breaking into houses without even having meant to look for them and after taking these guns they often lead to an unfortunate gun death. With that being said, so begins the real story behind my brother Brian Richardson’s murder.
Growing up in the inner city of Baltimore, Maryland is not a walk in the park for any child and at the age of 16 years old Brian had already gone through some major life changing experiences.
Brian seemed to be on the right path in life with a good job, lots of good friends and a car he bought and fixed up himself. See at 16 years old Brian was already an excellent mechanic due to the fact that after school he would hang out at an older gentleman’s home a few doors up the street from where we lived that fixed lawn mowers, built mini bikes and motorcycles and often fixed neighborhood cars. Mr.Melzer taught Brian everything he knew and treated him as if he were a son. When Brian turned 16 years old he bought a 68 Dodge Charger (my favorite car) and worked on it every day fixing it up and wow this car was fast. My lifelong friend Tony often tells the story of Brian’s charger peeling out in front of his house leaving the hole neighborhood engulfed in smoke and marks on the street that are still there today.
One day when driving through the neighborhood Brian was stopped by some of the neighborhoods gang members. The gang members told Brian that if he did not hurry and put these stolen goods in the trunk of his car fast they would take his car and beat the crap out of him. Brian not wanting anything to happen to his car or take a beating from them agreed to this and they threw the stolen stuff in and he was able to drive away.
The police had their eyes on Brian already for speeding around the neighborhood so much and of course he was…… Brian was 16 years of age with the fastest car on the street and the knowledge to fix it and make it faster also a brand new drivers license even thou he had been driving for years, but that’s another story!
The day finally had come…. Brian was caught speeding and was pulled over by one of the police in the neighborhood that we all knew. The officer gave Brian a ticket for speeding but knowing that there were a lot of robberies going on around town he decided to search his car. The officer opened Brian’s trunk of his car and found the stolen goods that the gang members had made him put in there the day before. Needless to say Brian was arrested and booked for larceny, possession of stolen goods etc. Brian not wanting to go to jail for robberies he did not commit decided to tell the police what had happened and who was behind all the robberies in our neighborhood. The police believed him but told Brian that he would have to turn States Witness and testify in court against the gang members. Brian had no choice and agreed to this and was soon released…..Not having a clue to what was going to happen in the next few days of his very, very short life.
Police now given all the information that they need to pick up and arrest all the gang members involved still did not….why?....The police decided that they would try to get more information on other crimes that were going on in the neighborhood. Police told all of the gang members that Brian Richardson was ratting them out and turning states witness on them and they knew about all the robberies going on and who was involved. Police then began to tell these gang members that if they did not start talking to them they were all going to jail soon. Brian was a walking dead man at this point.
The very next night Brian was spotted by the gang walking down the street and picked up by 3 of the gang members, Victor Ennis, Kenneth Quaster, and Perry Everett who after my brother’s murder would go on to kill many others. Brian had no choice but to get into their car and they took off. Victor told Brian they were just going to hang out, ride around and party and that he was going with them, again no choice.
Perry Everett then began to head north on highway 83 towards Pennsylvania away from Baltimore, Maryland where they all lived. Once reaching the MD/PA line often referred to as the Mason Dixon Line which separates the north from the south they took an exit and ended up on Middletown Rd which was a very unpopulated and wooded area back then. It is my belief that they said they were going to stop the car and take a leak and everyone got out except Perry Everett the driver. Victor Ennis and Kenneth Quaster began to tell Brian what was really going on and Quaster takes out the stolen gun and shoots Brian many, many times they jump back in the car quick and take off leaving Brian to die in the woods. Brian was found days later after reporting him missing and laid to rest on April 21, 1981
